Bob's Woods at the Earl Poole Sanctuary

This 30+ acre Berks Nature-owned property is the result of a generous land donation in the late 1970s. The site is managed for wildlife and includes a barn, trails, wooded areas, a stream, picnic areas, and is a popular birding site. We look forward to sharing this special place with you and introducing you to the native wildflowers, birds, and insects that call our property “home”. This property is perfect for quiet nature walks.

PLEASE NOTE – During Winter months, Berks Nature does not plow the Bob’s Woods parking lot or entrance so it may be covered and icy. Please be careful if you choose to use this preserve during the Winter season!

Welcome to the Woods!

Bob’s Woods at the Earl Poole Sanctuary began as a 10-acre donation from Richard and Frances Bortz; Berks Nature’s first land donation as a trust.

The rich soils of these properties sustained a working farm and apple orchard until 1970. The barn and bygone cider press have since been removed, and today much of the now 40-acre property has returned to forest.

The natural features of this preserve – the riparian valley and headwaters of Antietam Creek, the native wildflowers, and the dynamic edges between field and forest – provide rich and varied habitat for an abundance of wildlife. The diversity of birds in particular granted the land its first name: the Earl Poole Sanctuary, in honor of famed ornithologist and artist Dr. Earl L Poole.

The preserve was later renamed in memory of Robert C. “Bob” Fleming, an outdoor enthusiast and long-time resident of the Oley Hills, known for sharing his knowledge of nature with all who walked the woods with him.

The legacy of these two men flourishes across this nature preserve, which Berks Nature continues to steward as both a retreat for nature lovers and a wildlife sanctuary.
